Does the interference effect really hurt hypertrophy?

The interference effect is real in some contexts, but running does not automatically prevent hypertrophy. Recent meta-analyses often find little or no difference in whole-muscle hypertrophy when strength and endurance are combined at a reasonable dose, while lower-body strength, power, and fiber size can be more sensitive to endurance type and volume. Interference grows with high running volume, frequent high intensity, low protein or energy, and hard leg sessions stacked without recovery. To limit conflict, prioritize strength when muscle is the goal, keep most running easy, separate hard stimuli when possible, and judge real outcomes: loads, measurements, and performance. Running is not an automatic villain; weekly dose and design matter more than whether running is present. Adjust one variable at a time so you can see what actually helped or hurt. Interference is not all or nothing

Molecular mechanisms help generate hypotheses, but they are not destiny. The result emerges from stimulus, fatigue, nutrition, sleep, modality, and experience across weeks.

A 2022 meta analysis found compatibility for maximal strength and hypertrophy, with less explosive strength development when strength and endurance occurred in the same session. Another analysis found no meaningful whole muscle difference, while protocols using HIIT showed lower fiber hypertrophy in some subgroups.

Lower body dynamic strength appears more sensitive in trained participants than in beginners. Sex specific conclusions remain uncertain because samples are often small and include few women.

How to reduce conflict in practice

Set the priority for the training block, protect the main workout, and limit redundant work. If hypertrophy is the goal, you do not need to remove running, but controlling intense volume can preserve lifting quality.

Separating sessions may improve execution, but there is no magic interval. Tracking loads, repetitions, easy pace, and recovery is more useful than trying to eliminate every physiological interaction.

  • Prioritize the main modality in the calendar.
  • Use easy running for lower cost volume.
